Make your contribution to the adoption of the UNGA resolution on the rights of children left without parental care

8 May 2018

Dear friends! We ask you to support us in calling for the adoption in 2019 of the resolution of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on the rights of the child aimed at children left without parental care.

The Coalition of Child Protection Organizations and Networks has developed a two-page appeal in which the UN member states are invited to select the issue of children left without parental care as a focus for the resolution on the rights of the child in 2019 and provides convincing reasons for this.

The UNGA Resolution on the Rights of the Child is a vital tool for resolving pressing issues relating to children, with detailed recommendations on how to protect themselves and their rights, but to date there has been no resolution on the rights of the child dedicated specifically to the rights of children left without parental care. Without access to quality and appropriate alternative care, children deprived of parental care and those who are at risk of losing it often face a downward spiral of economic, social and structural exclusion from society and marginalization with long-term consequences for them and their communities.

The year 2019 is particularly important, as this year marks the 10th anniversary of the Guidelines for the Alternative Care of Children (A/RES/64/142) adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2009, providing a unique and timely opportunity for the UN General Assembly to address to the problems of children left without parental care. Since then, significant progress has been made, and this represents an opportunity to review progress and analyze the impact that these Guidelines have on children's lives. Children left without parental care suffer from a wide range of problems included in the Agenda for Sustainable Development 2030, and they are one of the most "unincorporated" groups of children. Therefore, if we want to achieve the goals of sustainable development and their principle of "achieving first of all those who are left behind", it is necessary to focus on children left without parental care.

For all these reasons, we would like to ask you for support, by signing this appeal for the UN member states at the earliest convenient time for you.
